Job Description:
Control & Automation Engineer
Location: Sheffield
Salary & Benefits: £50,000-£60,000 + bonus + pension + ongoing development
Elevation Recruitment are working with a long-established manufacturing site in Sheffield who are looking to bring in an Automation & Control Engineer to take the lead on all things industrial control systems. If you enjoy being the go-to technical expert, keeping critical kit running smoothly, and shaping how a site’s automation evolves, this is very much your playground.
You’ll be the person ensuring their production processes stay safe, reliable and as downtime-free as humanly possible across a busy paint and sealant manufacturing operation. Ideal for someone with either a relevant engineering degree or solid hands-on experience in controls, automation, or maintenance.
The role * Lead programming, servicing, fault-finding and RCA across PLCs, automation systems, SCADA, HMIs, electrical controls and distribution systems.
* Act as the on-site expert for all industrial control systems.
* Manage the relationship and service contract with the site’s preferred ICS supplier.
* Maintain control system documentation, drawings and technical reference material.
* Work with Reliability Engineering on the ICS obsolescence roadmap — identifying risk, prioritising upgrades and driving investment cases.
* Optimise current control programmes and configurations, improving plant performance and recommending smarter ways of working.
* Specify ICS equipment, prepare BOMs, costs and support procurement and fabrication of electrical control hardware.
* Support and lead improvement projects across the site.
* Own electrical schematics, specifications and program backups.
About you * Degree in Engineering or solid practical experience (c.5+ years) in engineering or maintenance.
* Strong background with industrial control systems, PLCs and SCADA environments.
* Confident working cross-functionally and solving problems with a calm head.
* Familiar with continuous improvement methods and PPM systems.
* ATEX/DSEAR experience would be a welcome bonus.
Technical requirements Essential:
* Experience with Rockwell and Siemens automation platforms.
* PLC programming (Allen-Bradley + Siemens).
* SCADA development (Ignition, InTouch).
* Good understanding of industrial networks: DeviceNet, Ethernet/IP, Profibus.
* Ability to read electrical schematics and P&IDs.
* Commissioning and site support experience.
Desirable:
* CI certifications (Lean, Six Sigma, RCA).
* Understanding of ISA/IEC/PIP standards.
* Knowledge of process safety within automation.
* Awareness of SEVESO/COMAH environments.
