Job Description:
Entity:
Trading & Shipping
Job Family Group:
Shipping Group
Job Description:
Hot and frenetic, the engine room is the beating heart of any ship. Our training will teach you about the ship’s main engines and how to run and maintain the mechanical equipment on board.
You’ll split your time between maritime college and sea. At college you will learn about workshop skills, engineering science, analytical methods, pneumatics and hydraulics, instrumentation & control principles, marine electrical systems, diesel propulsion and more.
When at sea you’ll work day shifts and sometimes support watch keeping in the engine room. It means handling anything from stripping an engine and inspecting components, to following the path of water, oil or steam through the ship. You’ll be dealing with large machinery, so safety is critical. As an officer, you’ll also be in charge of the safety of all staff in the engine room.
Once trained and qualified, you’ll have a UK foundation degree or college diploma in marine operations, a seafarer’s licence and engineer watch keeping officer ’certificate of competency’ from the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA).
Minimum Entry Level Requirements
* Must be 18 years old by 1st September 2024
* Be a British citizen and have a British passport
* Applicants need to pass an industry-standard medical examination in order to complete a placement at sea
* Minimum Qualifications
* 4 GCSE’s – Grade 4 ( C ) or above, must include English, Maths and Science
What will you gain after completion of programme
This will depend on what qualifications you already hold.
Those joining us with GCSE as the highest relevant education will complete a Level 3 Deck Shipping & Maritime Operations Diploma, with progression to Level 5
Those joining with relevant A levels or equivalent (to a minimum of 48 UCAS points) will complete a BSc (Hons) in Marine Engineering.
