We are looking for colleagues to join our Underwriting Department. Successful candidates will have excellent customer service skills as well as an enthusiasm and passion for doing the right thing for our customers whilst managing risk and lending responsibly.
The role is to assess the current financial circumstances of customers who are applying for loans, mortgages and other lending facilities, to provide well-reasoned lending decisions.
As part of the role, you will review lending applications to determine customer affordability and whether HSBC lending policies are satisfied. You will need excellent communication skills and the ability to handle challenging conversations. At all times you will treat our customers fairly, making this a driving factor in everything you do, whilst also managing and developing yourself to ensure that all standards, disciplines and internal controls are adhered to.
In this role you will:
* Work with care and attention and adhering to HSBC policy at all times to ensure you minimise credit, fraud, regulatory and conduct risks. Adapting to change and the need to use a variety of IT systems across multiple channels and products.
* Assess the current financial circumstances of customers who are applying for a lending facility
* Make well-reasoned lending decisions which you can justify and explain both verbally and in writing
* Handle verbal and written communications with a variety of audiences, including customers, mortgage brokers, and HSBC advisers
* Problem solving to reach good, fair outcomes for customers and avoid complaints
* Analysing information and data, while using initiative and judgement to reach decisions
* Manage your own caseload and prioritising work independently
* Work with colleagues in other areas of HSBC, and also external stakeholders, to provide guidance and feedback to improve customer experience
* Ensure all procedures and internal controls are adhered to minimise the risk of financial loss to HSBC
Qualifications - External
To be successful in this role you should meet the following requirements:
* Previous experience of working in a customer service, retail, or banking environment
* Analytical experience with an inquisitive nature
* Previous underwriting or decision-making experience
* Excellent communication skills both verbal and written
* Ideally have worked or have knowledge of secured Mortgage Lending.
* An awareness of credit risk/credit principles and procedures relating to the approval of mortgages and loans
* Understanding of the regulatory environment and retail banking market
This role is based in Sheffield and the working window is 8-6.30pm Mon-Friday.
