Job Description:
Summary We are offering a fixed-term, full time position Gardener. As a Gardener for the National Trust, you’ll be a hands-on member of the garden team, involved in every aspect of gardening at Lyme and a private property near Macclesfield. You will be responsible for day-to-day maintenance, providing the highest standards of horticulture. You’ll also play a vital role in improving the experience of visitors to the garden and wider estate.

You may be asked to work occasional weekends, bank holidays and evenings.

What it’s like to work here This Peak District mansion is a popular filming location and was made famous as Pemberley in the BBC adaptation of Pride and Prejudice. High above Manchester, it is a beautiful and special place and two thirds of our visitors come to enjoy the outdoors here. Lyme boasts 1,400 acres of beautiful parkland and rugged moorland, 2 herds of wild red deer, a very busy programme of events, art and exhibitions.
Lyme also has extensive gardens including the formal Italian Garden, Rose Garden, double Herbaceous Borders, a classical Orangery and wilder Killtime stream garden and plantsman’s Vicary Gibbs garden. There is also a nursery with greenhouses and composting site. You will be working in a team of 5 gardeners and up to 8 volunteers a day.
You will also be working on a private property to look after the gardens on behalf of the client, including traditional herbaceous borders, gravel garden, kitchen plot and orchard. There you will work alongside the Head Gardener giving you one-on-one mentorship to hone your skills and plant knowledge with the potential to take on more creative responsibility.

What you’ll be doing You’ll be helping to keep the gardenin tiptop condition every day. You will be involved in a wide variety of gardening tasks including propagation, weeding, mowing, mulching, pruning shrubs, roses and climbers, and planting for seasonal spring display. You will also be using machinery such as hedge cutters, leaf blowers, lawnmowers and tractors.  
Other duties might include checking the garden is safe for visitors, answering enquiries, working with volunteers, and working with other departments to create an enjoyable visitor experience.
Who we’re looking for We’d love to hear from you if you’re: 
* an enthusiastic horticulturist and hands-on gardener, who’s worked with hard landscaping before 
* knowledgeable about plants, with a great eye for detail. 
* experienced with machinery, including tractors, chainsaws, rotary and cylinder mowers, and with some knowledge of maintenance 
* a driver with a full licence  
* able to manage a demanding outdoor role  
* good at talking to, and getting on with, all kinds of people 
* equally confident working within a team, with volunteers or on your own 
* able to keep to time, plan and meet deadlines
