Job Description:
Senior Analytical Chemist (Extraction / Separation) £50-65k + Bonus
South East, Permanent ABJ7259
An experienced analytical chemist / separations chemist or biochemist working in plant, food, cosmetic or fragrance chemistry, proficient in extraction techniques, is urgently required to support the plant / food chemistry workstreams to deliver strategic priorities in extraction by using state of the art facilities within a new global R&D team.
As a skilled separations chemist you will be experienced in HP-TLC and extraction techniques like (SFE (super critical fluid extraction), SFC (super critical fluid chromatography) desirable, separation e.g. distillation and a strong knowledge and background in LC/MS to liaise with product teams who further analyse from extractions. You will support the technical developments in this exclusive field and lead technical interactions with project teams, strategic suppliers and research partners.
Key Responsibilities
*Setting up extraction capabilities including method development to achieve target specs.
*Using HPTLC (high performance thin layer chromatography) and SFE, separation and distillation techniques
*Working at scale
*Developing methods to trace manufacturing consistency in accordance with quality standards.
*Building a robust patent portfolio from a process and extract composition angles.
*Spec verification of samples for consumer research.
*Ageing studies.
*Developing methods to enhance process ESG metrics.
*Stock management and analytical data recording and management.
*Closely monitor emerging extraction technologies and potential external partners.
Qualifications and Experience
*PhD in chemistry or food chemistry or food science or plant chemistry, plant biochemistry, Plant biotechnology, Phytochemistry, Pharmacognosy or Botany with a strong background in natural product research.
*Extensive hands-on experience in various extraction technologies including solvent extraction, and SFE and use of HP-TLC.
*A strong knowledge of or hands-on experience in detection methods including LC/MS and HP-TLC
*Good knowledge in chromatography science, including thin layer chromatography, SFC, liquid chromatography (LC) , gas chromatography (GC) and spectrophotometry techniques and distillation techniques.
*Hands-on experience in standard lab testing including density and pH measurements.
*Proven strategic thinking, analysing critical factors and variables to influence long-term project success.
*Successful collaboration among diverse cultures; good initiative and independent thinking; effective communication, briefing and presentation skills.
*Resilient, flexible, and confident to work in a fast-paced, dynamic, and ambiguous environment.
