Job Description:
Job Advert: 1:1 Primary Teaching Assistant (with Personal Care Support) - SEN Support - Coalville

Aspire People, a leading education recruitment agency, is seeking a dedicated and compassionate SEN Primary Teaching Assistant to join a supportive and inclusive school in Coalville. This rewarding role involves working with children with Special Educational Needs (SEN) and providing tailored academic and personal care support to ensure they can thrive both in the classroom and throughout their daily routines.

Position: SEN Primary Teaching Assistant (with Personal Care Support)
Location: Coalville, Leicestershire
Start Date: ASAP

About the Role:
This is a pivotal role in supporting a child with varied Special Educational Needs (SEN), including but not limited to physical disabilities, learning difficulties, and social/emotional needs. As a 1:1 Teaching Assistant, you will be responsible for providing academic support, assisting with personal care, and ensuring the child is able to fully engage in all aspects of school life.

The child you will be supporting requires a tailored approach to both learning and personal care, which will involve helping with basic personal needs, such as toileting, feeding, and mobility, as well as adapting learning activities to suit their individual requirements. You will work closely with the class teacher, the Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO), and other staff to create a positive and inclusive environment for the child.

Key Responsibilities:
1:1 Academic Support: Provide tailored 1:1 academic support to a child with varied SEN, ensuring they are engaged in the curriculum and able to participate in classroom activities at their own pace. You will work to develop learning strategies that support the child’s individual needs and help them reach their full potential.

Personal Care Support: Assist the child with personal care tasks, which may include feeding, toileting, dressing, and assisting with mobility. You will also help manage any health-related needs as per the child’s care plan and ensure their comfort and dignity at all times.

SEN Support: Provide support for children with a range of SEN, including physical disabilities, learning difficulties (such as autism, dyslexia, or ADHD), and emotional or behavioural challenges. This may involve adapting activities and providing additional assistance to ensure the child can fully engage in the classroom and social activities.

Promote Independence: Encourage the child to develop independence in both academic tasks and personal care routines. You will assist in building their self-esteem and confidence by providing positive reinforcement and fostering a sense of achievement.

Social and Emotional Development: Support the child’s social integration, helping them build positive relationships with their peers and other adults in the school. Encourage communication and social skills, working with the child to overcome challenges and promoting a sense of belonging within the school community.

Collaborative Working: Work closely with the class teacher, SENCO, and other support staff to plan and implement strategies for the child’s learning, development, and well-being. Contribute to the creation and monitoring of individual education plans (IEPs) and provide feedback to parents and professionals when necessary.

Safeguarding and Well-Being: Ensure the child’s safety, health, and well-being at all times, adhering to school policies and safeguarding procedures. Report any concerns promptly and appropriately.

Ideal Candidate:
Experience: Previous experience working as a Teaching Assistant in a UK primary school, ideally supporting children with a range of SEN, including physical disabilities, learning difficulties, and social/emotional challenges.
Personal Care Experience: Experience supporting children with personal care needs is essential. This includes assisting with feeding, toileting, dressing, and mobility tasks as needed.

Qualifications:

A relevant qualification in education (e.g., Level 2 or 3 Teaching Assistant qualification) is desirable.
Additional training in supporting children with SEN or personal care needs would be a distinct advantage (e.g., manual handling training, SEN-focused CPD).
DBS Check: Must have an Enhanced DBS on the Update Service or be willing to undergo one.

Patient, Compassionate, and Flexible: A caring, patient, and empathetic nature is essential, with the ability to remain calm and positive, even in challenging situations. You should be adaptable and able to respond flexibly to the changing needs of the child.

Strong Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with a wide range of professionals, parents, and the child themselves.

Team Player: Ability to work collaboratively with the class teacher, SENCO, and other school staff to ensure the best outcomes for the child. A positive, professional attitude to working as part of a team is essential.
