Are you a proactive worker and thinker with experience of providing all-round support to formal committees and panels?

Alongside the interests and challenges of the role, we know that candidates also want to be enthused about the mission and values of the organisation they might be joining.

IStructE is a charity and the professional body for structural engineers. We have a global membership who have designed many of the world’s iconic structures as well as many of the buildings and bridges we take almost for granted in our daily lives.

Creating safer structures for the benefit of the public is at the heart of our remit and this includes environmental sustainability with structural engineers and the Institution at the heart of the impact construction has on natural resources and climate change.

We are passionate about inclusion and work hard to help those with talent, irrespective of background, to find and develop a route into the profession. Many of our members work to support the world’s most vulnerable communities, especially those living in places prone to natural hazards such as earthquakes and extreme flooding.

If working as part of a staff team of about 74 people and alongside many of our members to address these issues appeals to you, then we would love to hear from you.

The Role:

As Technical Secretariat, you will be instrumental in the planning and coordination of your assigned panels and committees, ensuring all meetings run smoothly. You will provide full support, from preparing agendas and reports, to writing minutes. Taking a proactive approach, you will be responsible for the successful delivery of any agreed actions and supporting activities, such as coordinating grants, awards and lectures.

Although it’s imperative to work collaboratively as a team, being able to work proficiently and independently is necessary to succeed in this role. You must be confident in managing your own deadlines and projects in order to meet the needs of your key stakeholders and of the wider Institution.
This role will also include providing general administrative support to the team, including being first point of contact for queries, monitoring budgets, maintaining spreadsheets and databases, and coordinating events.

To be shortlisted for this post, you must have:

- Experience acting as a committee secretariat with an understanding of all processes involved.
- Experience of writing minutes and reports.
- Experience of delivering core admin duties i.e. maintaining spreadsheets and monitoring budgets
- Exceptional communication skills both written and verbal communication
- Excellent organisation skills

Experience working in a Membership organisation would be advantageous.

What we can offer you:

- 25 days’ paid annual leave (rising with service) plus bank holidays and flexi leave
- A pension scheme with up to 9% employer contributions
- Life Insurance
- Private Medical Insurance
- Permanent Health Insurance
- Health Cash Plan
- Employee Assistance Programme
- Season Ticket Loan
- Cycle to Work Scheme
- Continuous Professional Development
- The potential to rise to 21 hours (over 3 days)

Working Conditions:

We are based on the edge of the city, our office is bright, modern and open plan. We are an inclusive and friendly workforce. We are presently operating a working model of office based and remote working and envisage operating a longer-term hybrid working model.
