Exciting Opportunity: Port Health Officer
Location: London Gateway or other Port Health locations
Salary: Competitive - £31 per hour plus holiday pay (PAYE)
Contract Type: Temporary - 3 months (with potential to extend)
Working Pattern: Full-Time

About the Role: As a Port Health Officer, you will be part of a dynamic team dedicated to maintaining high standards of public health at some of the busiest ports in the UK. Your role will involve a mix of inspection, enforcement, and advisory duties, ensuring that all imported goods meet UK and EU regulations.
Key Responsibilities:
*Implement Biosecurity Controls: Oversee and enforce biosecurity measures for Products of Non-Animal Origin (NAOs), fish, and fishery products to ensure compliance with health and safety standards.
*Supervise Stakeholders: Manage and supervise internal and external stakeholders operating at the Border Control Posts, ensuring smooth and compliant operations.
*Enforce Import Legislation: Prevent the importation of non-compliant food and feed consignments by enforcing relevant legislation and taking appropriate action.
*Sampling Programme Development: Contribute to the UK National Monitoring plan by developing and implementing an annual sampling programme for Products of Non-Animal Origin.
*Quality Management System (QMS): Support the management and continuous improvement of the Port Health QMS, ensuring compliance with ISO standards.
*Legislative Consultation: Participate in and contribute to consultations on new legislation, ensuring that the Port Health Service is prepared and compliant with upcoming regulations.
*Liaison with National and International Stakeholders: Work closely with national and international bodies, including the EU Commission, UK Border Force, and other regulatory agencies, on matters related to port health and import controls.
*Enforce Environmental Legislation: Implement and enforce environmental protection controls, including waste disposal regulations and pollution controls in port areas.
*Instruct and Train: Provide guidance, training, and oversight to technical and support staff in executing port health duties, ensuring consistent and effective regulatory action.
*Health and Safety Compliance: Actively implement and promote health and safety policies, ensuring a safe working environment for yourself and others.
About You: We are looking for a motivated and experienced professional with a background in Environmental Health or Port Health. You should have a strong understanding of food safety, biosecurity, and environmental protection regulations, as well as excellent communication and problem-solving skills.
Qualifications:
*A Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Environmental Health, approved by the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health.
*Registration with the EHO Registration Board (EHORB) to practice as an Environmental Health Officer in the UK - or working towards it
*Ideally, experience as an Official Fish Inspector and familiarity with systems such as IPAFFS and PHILIS, port inventory systems, etc.
