Job Description:
A leading specialist engineering business, known for its technical expertise and commitment to quality, is seeking a Qualified Financial Controller to join its management team. The company operates in a dynamic, precision-driven environment, supplying engineering solutions to a diverse client base.
Role OverviewReporting directly to the Managing Director, the Financial Controller will take full responsibility for the finance function and play a key role within the management team. The successful candidate will provide financial leadership, ensure robust financial management, and support the achievement of business objectives through effective reporting, control, and strategic input.
Key Responsibilities*Leadership and Financial Management
*Work closely with the Managing Director and management team to optimise company performance against agreed objectives and goals.
*Manage, develop, and maintain a capable and well-resourced Accounts team.
*Review financial systems, processes, and controls to identify and implement improvements.
*Financial Reporting and Analysis
*Prepare monthly management accounts, including balance sheet and profit and loss statements.
*Provide monthly variance analysis and financial performance reports to the Managing Director.
*Prepare annual budgets and profit forecasts, with ongoing variance and trend analysis.
*Conduct regular business reviews covering sales, orders, margins, backlog, and cost trends.
*Manage the overhead cost control process.
*Compliance and Statutory Duties
*Prepare statutory accounts and liaise with external auditors and accountants.
*Oversee corporation tax returns and ensure compliance with HMRC and Companies House requirements.
*Prepare and submit quarterly VAT returns.
*Manage the year-end audit process, including coordination of year-end stocktakes and valuations.
*Maintain reconciled general ledger accounts and ensure appropriate cost allocation.
*Operational and Commercial Support
*Oversee credit control and payroll (weekly and monthly), including month-end and year-end reporting.
*Work closely with sales, operations, and procurement teams, providing financial input for estimates and costings.
*Conduct regular stock valuation and analysis.
*Support the Managing Director in reviewing and assessing potential acquisitions.
*Additional Responsibilities
*Act as Company Secretary and Pension Scheme Trustee.
*Oversee IT, Administration, and HR functions, liaising with outsourced providers where necessary.
Key Skills and Attributes*Fully qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, or CIMA).
*Strong financial systems knowledge, particularly SAGE and Microsoft Excel.
*Highly organised with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
*Adaptable and able to respond effectively to change.
*Self-motivated with strong interpersonal and communication skills.
*Strong analytical ability and attention to detail.
*Collaborative team player with a hands-on approach.
