Underwriting Team Manager
The Role
As Underwriting Team Manager, you will be responsible for managing a team of underwriters and origination staff while maintaining your own underwriting pipeline. You’ll ensure high-quality credit decisions, strong risk management, and excellent service levels across brokers, solicitors, and valuers.
This is a dynamic role within a fast-growing business where responsibilities may evolve in line with business needs.
Key Responsibilities
*Manage and oversee a team of underwriters and origination personnel, including workflow allocation and performance reporting
*Maintain the highest underwriting and credit quality standards across the team
*Underwrite new applications from initial assessment through to completion, in line with lending policies
*Manage a personal pipeline of approximately 15 live cases at any one time
*Conduct ongoing risk assessment on individual cases and across the wider team pipeline
*Prepare, present, and mandate credit papers to credit committee, clearly articulating risks, mitigants, and asset quality
*Maintain regular contact with brokers, solicitors, and valuers to ensure strong relationships and service delivery
*Work closely with finance and treasury teams to ensure timely funding of completed cases
*Provide regular pipeline updates to internal stakeholders
*Review and improve underwriting processes and policies to drive efficiency without compromising standards
*Ensure adherence to individual and team KPIs
*Prioritise workload effectively and meet agreed deadlines
*Hold regular check-ins with senior risk leadership to ensure business needs are met
Knowledge & Experience
*Minimum 5 years’ experience in specialist finance underwriting
*Proven experience managing or leading underwriting teams
*Lending mandate of £500,000+
*Strong technical knowledge of specialist property finance (bridging experience preferred)
*Solid understanding of mortgage and lending regulatory requirements
*CeMAP qualification desirable but not essential
*Excellent communication and relationship-building skills
*Comfortable operating in a fast-paced, evolving environment
