Join Our Team as a Field Service Technician.
Are you an experienced technician with a passion for keeping rail operations safe, reliable, and performing at their best? Do you enjoy problem-solving on the move, working across different environments, and taking ownership of safety-critical tasks?
We’re looking for a dedicated Field Service Technician to support both depot-based and on-board engineering activities. This is a hands-on role where no two days are the same from fault-finding on the network to carrying out maintenance and servicing in the depot.
With an excellent salary, strong benefits, and long-term career stability, this is an ideal opportunity for someone who thrives in a fast-paced, safety-focused engineering environment.
Purpose of the Role.
You will be responsible for inspecting, maintaining, and repairing a wide range of mechanical and electrical systems across the fleet. Working both independently and as part of a wider engineering team, you’ll ensure all work meets strict rail safety standards and operational requirements.
Duties may evolve as operational needs change, and flexibility is essential.
Key Responsibilities.
On-Board Duties.
*Prepare and dispose of trains before and after service.
*Carry out fuelling, water checks, and basic servicing.
*Safely dispatch trains from the depot.
*Monitor train performance throughout operation.
*Attend and rectify defects during service.
*Complete turn-round servicing between outward and return journeys.
*Perform end-of-day disposal tasks and resolve outstanding issues.
Depot Duties.
*Conduct maintenance examinations on rail vehicles.
*Perform fault-finding, diagnostics, and repairs.
*Complete scheduled servicing and preventative maintenance.
*Assist with heavy overhaul repairs (C1 / C4)
*Overhaul and test still boilers.
*Service catering and gas equipment.
*Support depot infrastructure repairs when required.
*Maintain a safe, tidy, and compliant work environment.
*Liaise with depot teams, contractors, and wider engineering staff.
Additional Responsibilities.
*Inspect and maintain all safety-critical equipment.
*Complete high-quality repairs and component replacements.
*Ensure full compliance with railway safety regulations and procedures.
*Provide cover at additional sites when required.
*Accurately document all maintenance and repair activities.
*Communicate effectively with colleagues, supervisors, and operational staff.
Experience & Qualifications Required.
Essential.
*Level 3 qualification in Engineering, Electrical, Mechanical, or a related discipline.
*Proven experience in a hands-on engineering or maintenance role.
*Strong mechanical and electrical fault-finding skills.
*Ability to work safely in a safety-critical environment.
*Comfortable working independently and making decisions under pressure.
*Full UK driving licence (if travel between sites is required).
Industries Considered.
