Workshop Shift Manager
Location: Plymouth
Contract Length: 26 Weeks
Hours: 37 Hours per Week
Pay Rate: PAYE: £19.32 per houror Umbrella: £25.28 per hour
Seven Resourcing is recruiting for a Workshop Shift Manager to join a busy local authority fleet service in Plymouth. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced fleet maintenance manager, automotive workshop supervisor, or vehicle operations manager looking to take the next step in their career within public sector fleet management.
In this role, you will be responsible for the day-to-day management of a vehicle workshop, ensuring the effective and efficient delivery of scheduled maintenance, reactive repairs, MOT preparation, fleet inspections, and compliance checks across a diverse council fleet.
Key Responsibilities
As Workshop Shift Manager, you will:
*Lead the daily operations of the fleet workshop, ensuring all vehicle maintenance and repairs are completed safely, efficiently, and on time.
*Ensure full compliance with Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) regulations and the Council’s Operator Licence requirements.
*Oversee all inspections, servicing, maintenance, and statutory testing, ensuring work is completed in line with current UK legislation (approx. 15%).
*Effectively manage and motivate a team of approximately 14 FTE operational staff, delivering planned and reactive maintenance as well as inspections (approx. 25%).
*Manage and monitor a £750,000 service budget, ensuring cost-effective delivery of fleet maintenance and repair services (approx. 10%).
*Implement and maintain robust workshop policies, procedures, and quality assurance processes.
*Drive continuous improvement across workshop operations, focusing on efficiency, compliance, and service delivery standards.
*Maintain accurate maintenance records and support audit and compliance inspections.
About You
To succeed in this Workshop Shift Manager job in Plymouth, you will have:
*Proven experience in automotive workshop management, fleet operations management, or vehicle maintenance supervision.
*Strong working knowledge of VOSA compliance, Operator Licence requirements, and UK vehicle maintenance legislation.
*Experience managing workshop teams within a commercial vehicle, HGV, LGV, or public sector fleet environment.
*Budget management experience and the ability to control maintenance costs effectively.
*Excellent leadership, organisational, and communication skills.
*A proactive approach to health & safety, compliance, and performance management.
Relevant qualifications in vehicle maintenance, transport management, or automotive engineering are desirable.
