A well-established and highly regarded accountancy practice in Essex is looking to recruit an experienced Bookkeeper to join its Chelmsford office. With a strong reputation built over several decades, the firm works closely with a wide range of owner-managed businesses and individuals, providing tailored accounting, tax and advisory services. This role offers the opportunity to work within a supportive and collaborative team environment while managing bookkeeping responsibilities for a varied client portfolio. The successful candidate will play an important role in ensuring accurate financial records for clients while also supporting the wider team with day-to-day practice operations.
Role Responsibilities
*Maintain accurate bookkeeping records for a portfolio of clients across various industries.
*Process day-to-day financial transactions including sales, purchases and bank postings.
*Perform regular bank and balance sheet reconciliations.
*Prepare and submit VAT returns in line with HMRC requirements.
*Maintain and update fixed asset schedules where required.
*Assist the accounts team with information required for management accounts and year-end preparation.
*Work with cloud-based accounting software including Xero, Sage and associated data capture tools.
*Liaise with clients to obtain financial information and resolve bookkeeping queries.
*Provide guidance to clients on the use of accounting software where necessary.
*Support the smooth running of the office through occasional administrative duties such as handling incoming post, organising client documents and welcoming visitors.
*Work closely with colleagues across the accounts team to ensure accuracy and timely delivery of client work.
*Maintain strict confidentiality when handling client financial data.
Personal Requirements
*Previous experience working as a Bookkeeper within an accountancy practice environment.
*Good working knowledge of bookkeeping systems such as Xero and Sage.
*Experience with cloud-based document capture software such as Dext or Hubdoc would be advantageous.
*A solid understanding of bookkeeping principles and VAT processes.
*Highly organised with the ability to manage work across multiple clients.
*Strong attention to detail and a high level of accuracy.
*Confident communicator who is comfortable dealing with clients directly.
*Able to work independently while also contributing positively to a team environment.
*A proactive and flexible approach to supporting both client work and general office tasks.
