Principal Building Control Officer
*Location: Greater Manchester, North West
*Payrate: £29.08 - £30.81
*Job Type: Full-time
We are seeking a Principal Building Control Officer to lead our Building Control Team within the Public Protection Division. This pivotal role involves ensuring compliance with Building Regulations, developing new business, and contributing strategically to the division’s management.
Day-to-Day Responsibilities
*Lead and manage the Building Control Team, ensuring all submitted plans and on-site works comply with Building Regulations and associated legislation.
*Develop and generate new business opportunities across Greater Manchester and the North West.
*Provide day-to-day leadership including recruitment, appraisals, development, and conflict resolution within the team.
*Manage assigned budgets, ensuring accurate monitoring and reporting, and deliver annual work plans.
*Drive efficiency improvements, demonstrate value for money, and support strategic planning.
*Build effective working relationships across the directorate and the Council, and contribute to the overall management of the service.
*Examine applications and plans, inspect building work to ensure compliance, and provide technical advice to customers.
*Manage the work of Planning Officers and Business Support Officers, and oversee all processes relating to Building Regulations, Fire Safety, and Sports Ground legislation.
Required Skills & Qualifications
*Relevant degree or equivalent professional qualification with a commitment to ongoing professional development.
*Senior-level experience in building control within a large organisation.
*Proven experience in staff management, performance improvement, and continuous service improvement.
*Strong leadership skills with the ability to manage a large and complex workload effectively.
*Excellent problem-solving skills, with the ability to assess risks and implement practical solutions.
*Strong communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills, capable of working in multi-disciplinary teams.
*Detailed knowledge of building control, sustainable development principles, and an understanding of Building Control’s role in Sports Ground Safety and Dangerous Structures.
