Job Description:
As a Senior Commissioning Engineer, you will take ownership of commissioning planning, delivery and integration activities across a diverse capital programme. Acting as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) and primary technical point of contact, you will ensure that commissioning works are delivered in line with strategy, policy, and Health & Safety standards.
You’ll play a central role from early design review through to testing, commissioning, asset handover and decommissioning. You will identify risks, resolve technical issues, and work closely with internal and external stakeholders to ensure assets are safe, reliable, and ready for operation.
This role suits someone who thrives working independently, can manage multiple deadlines, adapts quickly to new processes, and consistently drives high-quality engineering outcomes.
Key Responsibilities*Lead commissioning activities across multiple engineering projects, ensuring compliance with Health & Safety legislation, engineering standards and United Utilities procedures
*Support the Agreement to Operate (ATO) process, assess commissioning risks and collaborate with Integration teams on service permissions
*Maintain permit compliance, report high-risk activities and provide accurate commissioning updates to the Commissioning Manager
*Develop and manage commissioning plans, risk assessments, method statements, documentation and technical files; lead commissioning meetings and ensure robust governance
*Act as a commissioning SME, providing technical direction and influencing decision-making across multidisciplinary project teams
*Mentor and support junior commissioning engineers and contribute to technical training programmes
*Work closely with project managers, operational colleagues and external contractors to resolve commissioning issues and enable seamless project handover
*Manage your own workload, prioritise effectively, and deliver projects on schedule
*Drive continuous improvement and support standardisation of commissioning processes across the programme


Skills & Experience Essential Experience
*Strong background in Commissioning Engineering, including strategy, planning, testing and delivery across the full project lifecycle
*Experience delivering commissioning on capital investment projects in utilities, water, wastewater, engineering or industrial environments
*Ability to work autonomously and manage multiple projects independently
*Excellent communication skills with the ability to influence internal and external stakeholders
*Strong problem-solving capability and confidence identifying and mitigating engineering risks
*Adaptability and eagerness to learn new systems, processes and ways of working
*Ability to work with senior stakeholders and represent commissioning effectively across the organisation
*Full UK/EU driving licence
Essential Qualifications
*Electrical or Instrumentation Apprenticeship
*Qualifications as required to gain ECS Gold Card (typically NVQ Level 3)
Desirable Qualifications
*C&G 2391 or equivalent verification/testing certification
*BTEC or equivalent technical qualification
*HNC/HND or Degree in a relevant STEM field
*BS7671 qualification
