Role Overview
Client is seeking an experienced Technical Documentation Specialist to support the Digital, Technology & Innovation (DTI) team on a short-term project. The successful candidate will be responsible for producing high-quality technical documentation related to the council’s IT infrastructure and systems.
The role requires someone who can quickly understand complex technical environments, engage with IT teams, and document systems, processes, and configurations clearly and accurately. The individual must be confident facilitating workshops, interviewing technical stakeholders, and translating complex information into structured documentation.
Key Responsibilities
Work closely with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs), engineers, and service teams to capture accurate technical information.
Conduct interviews and workshops with technical staff to gather insights and clarify processes.
Translate complex technical concepts into clear documentation for both technical and non-technical audiences where required.
Produce and maintain structured documentation including:
Technical architecture diagrams
System configuration guides
Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
Knowledge base articles
Identify gaps in existing documentation and recommend improvements.
Support automation and efficiency improvements through better documentation practices.
Develop and maintain the IT documentation repository.
Establish and enforce documentation standards, templates, taxonomy, and version control processes.
Constructively challenge technical details to ensure documentation accuracy and completeness.
Project Timeline
Week 1: Understand environments and agree scope of documentation.
Weeks 2–3: Conduct workshops and interviews with technical teams.
Weeks 4–10: Produce and refine documentation with stakeholders.
Weeks 11–12: Final review, adjustments, and project wrap-up with the IT Systems Manager.
Key Skills & Experience
Proven experience as a Technical Documentation Specialist, Technical Writer, or similar IT documentation role.
Strong understanding of IT infrastructure, networks, applications, cloud environments, and IT operations workflows.
Experience working within large-scale IT environments.
Excellent communication, documentation, and stakeholder engagement skills.
Ability to manage multiple documentation tasks independently in a fast-paced environment.
Strong attention to detail with the ability to create clear, structured, and accurate technical artefacts.
Experience creating visual documentation such as diagrams, charts, and annotated screenshots.
Ability to challenge and validate technical information to ensure accuracy.
Ideal Candidate Profile
Technical background (preferably former IT technician / infrastructure professional).
Comfortable working with engineering and service teams.
Strong analytical mindset with attention to detail.
Able to hit the ground running and deliver high-quality outputs quickly.
