Job Description:
Position: Financial Controller
Location: Head Office Based in Nottingham.
Suit candidates from Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire or Derbyshire)
Salary : £75k depending on experience
Our client is a £40 Million + turnover wholesale food company. It is seeking an ambitious "hands-on" all-round Financial Controller to manage its finances.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Reporting & Control
*Prepare accurate monthly management accounts, including profit and loss, balance sheet, and cash flow statements
*Ensure timely and accurate year-end statutory accounts in accordance with UK GAAP / FRS 102
*Maintain and improve financial controls, ensuring compliance with internal policies and audit requirements
*Liaise with external auditors and professional advisors
Budgeting, Forecasting & Commercial Analysis
*Lead the annual budgeting process and rolling forecasts
*Provide detailed variance analysis and financial commentary to senior management
*Analyse gross margins by product, customer, and channel
*Support pricing strategies and margin improvement initiatives
Cash Flow & Working Capital Management
*Produce and manage cash flow forecasts
*Optimise working capital, including:
*Inventory levels and turnover
*Trade receivables and credit control
*Supplier payment terms, including overseas suppliers
*Manage banking relationships, facilities, and covenant reporting
Inventory & Supply Chain Finance
*Oversee inventory accounting, including landed cost calculations (freight, duties, storage, and other import costs)
*Ensure accurate stock valuation and reconciliation between finance and warehouse systems
*Monitor and report on slow-moving, obsolete, damaged, or expired stock
*Support stock counts and investigate variances
Tax, VAT & Regulatory Compliance
*Ensure compliance with UK VAT, including import VAT and postponed VAT accounting
*Manage customs duties and import-related taxes
*Oversee corporation tax calculations and submissions
*Ensure all HMRC and statutory filing deadlines are met
Systems, Processes & Controls
*Manage and develop finance systems and reporting tools
*Improve integration between finance, warehouse, and order management systems
*Drive process improvements to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and reporting timelines
Risk Management & Governance
*Identify and manage financial risks, including foreign exchange exposure
*Support FX hedging strategies where applicable
*Maintain appropriate governance, internal controls, and segregation of duties
*Support insurance reviews and risk mitigation initiatives
Person Specification
Essential
*Professionally qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, or CIMA)
*Proven experience in a financial controller or senior finance role
*Strong background in inventory-based businesses, ideally food, FMCG, wholesale, or distribution
*Solid understanding of import VAT, landed costs, and stock valuation
*Excellent analytical, organisational, and communication skills
*Hands-on approach with strong attention to detail
Desirable
*Experience within a food import, food distribution, or FMCG environment
*Experience managing finance systems and process improvements
*Knowledge of foreign currency management
