Residential Childcare Practitioner

Location: Reading
Employer: Reading Borough Council
Contract: Initial 3-month contract
Hours: 37 hours per week (full-time)
Pay Rate: £16.70 per hour (Umbrella) / £13.26 per hour (PAYE)

About the Role

Reading Borough Council is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Residential Childcare Practitioner to support children and young people in a residential care setting. This role involves providing high-quality care, promoting positive outcomes, and supporting children’s emotional, social, and developmental needs.

You will work as part of a team to create a safe, nurturing, and structured environment where children can thrive.

Key Responsibilities*Support children in their daily routines, promoting independence and wellbeing


*Build positive, trusting relationships with children and young people


*Promote and safeguard the welfare of children at all times


*Support emotional, behavioural, and social development


*Follow care plans, risk assessments, and safeguarding procedures


*Work collaboratively with colleagues and external professionals


*Maintain accurate records and reports


Requirements*NVQ Level 3 in Childcare / Level 3 Diploma for Residential Childcare (or equivalent)


*Registered and subscribed to the DBS Update Service


*Knowledge of good practice in residential childcare settings


*Experience working with children


*Strong communication and interpersonal skills


*Ability to work effectively as part of a team


Working Pattern This role operates on a shift basis, including:

*7:00am – 3:00pm


*2:00pm – 10:00pm


*Alternate weekend working required
