Job Description:
We are recruiting for an Interim Design Engineer for a Local Authority in Cambridgeshire.
Job Title: Design Engineer
Rate: Negotiable (dependent on experience)
Contract Length: 3–6 months (with potential for extension or permanent opportunities)
Start Date: ASAP
Working Arrangement: Hybrid – typically 2 days per week onsite in Cambridgeshire + site visits
This role sits within the Place & Sustainability directorate, supporting the delivery of local infrastructure projects. The Design Engineer will play a key role in developing and delivering highway and transport schemes, acting as a technical lead on projects and ensuring designs meet CDM 2015 requirements, agreed objectives, budgets, and programme timelines.
Key Responsibilities:
*Plan and design local infrastructure projects including highways and transport schemes
*Lead the design of medium complexity projects and support wider project delivery
*Monitor project progress, budgets, and risk, ensuring effective programme management
*Liaise with internal teams, consultants, contractors, and stakeholders to ensure coordinated delivery
*Engage with key partners including local authorities, transport bodies, and community groups
*Ensure compliance with CDM 2015 and all relevant health & safety legislation
*Prepare and review technical drawings, reports, and design documentation
*Represent the Council at meetings, including public and stakeholder sessions
*Monitor consultant and contractor performance
*Promote continuous improvement, innovation, and best practice within the team
*Support low carbon design solutions and sustainable infrastructure outcomes
Person Specification:
*Degree in Civil Engineering or equivalent qualification/experience
*Working towards or holding a relevant professional membership (e.g. Incorporated Engineer status)
*Strong experience in the design and delivery of transport or highway infrastructure projects
*Knowledge of CDM 2015 and health & safety legislation
*Experience in budget, risk, and programme management
*Experience working within local government or similar environment (desirable)
*Full UK driving licence and ability to attend site visits
