Job Description:
Head of Maintenance & Infrastructure
Excellent benefits package including 42 days’ annual leave, enhanced employer pension contribution, 35-hour working week and an outstanding campus setting
This is a senior leadership opportunity within a large and complex university environment, offering responsibility for the maintenance and infrastructure performance of a substantial, multi-campus estate comprising academic, residential and specialist facilities across an approximately 300-acre site.
As Head of Maintenance & Infrastructure, you will have overall accountability for the planned and reactive maintenance of the estate, ensuring buildings and infrastructure are safe, compliant, reliable and able to support the day-to-day needs of the University. Leading multidisciplinary mechanical, electrical, building fabric and energy engineering teams, you will set clear priorities, maintain service standards and ensure resources are deployed effectively across a varied and operationally demanding portfolio.
The role combines operational leadership with strategic oversight. You will develop and implement maintenance and asset management strategies that address condition, compliance and lifecycle requirements, while also responding to emerging risks, operational pressures and business needs. Working closely with senior colleagues across Estates, Campus Services and the wider University, you will help ensure that the estate continues to support teaching, research, residential and commercial activity in a cost-effective and sustainable manner.
You will control an annual maintenance budget of approximately £3.5m, manage key supplier and contractor relationships, and take responsibility for statutory compliance across critical areas including gas safety, water hygiene (L8), asbestos management, permits to work and safe systems of work. Acting as the senior technical lead for maintenance, you will provide clear, professional advice that supports informed decision-making on standards, investment and risk.
In return, the University offers a role with genuine scope, responsibility and visibility. You will work within an organisation that recognises the importance of a well-managed estate and provides the support needed to lead effectively. The post attracts a competitive salary at Grade 9, a highly regarded pension scheme, generous annual leave and access to a broad range of health, wellbeing and development benefits.
We are seeking an experienced estates, infrastructure or hard FM leader with a strong technical background and a track record of managing maintenance services in a complex operational environment. You will be comfortable working at senior level, able to engage confidently with stakeholders, regulators and contractors, and capable of balancing compliance, service delivery, cost and long-term asset performance.
This role will suit someone looking to take ownership of a significant university estate and play a central role in shaping how it is maintained and managed for the future. If you are looking for a senior position with real scale, challenge and influence, we would be pleased to receive your application.
