Environmental Health Practitioner/Senior Food Safety Officer
Rate: negotiable hourly rate (Inside IR35, via umbrella company)
Duration: 6 months (with potential extension)
Working pattern: Hybrid
About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Environmental Health Officer to support a busy regulatory services team. This role will involve delivering a range of operational enforcement activities, working across food safety, health & safety, public health and port health functions.
You will play a key role in protecting public health, ensuring compliance and taking enforcement action where required, working closely with businesses, stakeholders and partner agencies.
Key Responsibilities
*Carry out inspections of food premises, manufacturing, storage and distribution sites, including vessels
*Enforce legislation across Food Safety, Health & Safety, Public Health and Port Health
*Conduct investigations into incidents, including food poisoning outbreaks and workplace accidents
*Undertake interviews under PACE, gather evidence, prepare witness statements and compile prosecution files
*Respond to service requests, complaints and enforcement matters in a timely and consistent manner
*Take formal enforcement action where required, including prosecution, closure, seizure and prohibition
*Work collaboratively with partner agencies to coordinate enforcement activity
*Maintain accurate records and produce reports, legal notices and court documentation
*Undertake sampling and analysis activities relating to food safety and product standards
Key Requirements
*Proven experience in an Environmental Health / Enforcement role within a local authority
*Strong knowledge of food safety, health & safety and public health legislation
*Experience conducting PACE interviews and preparing prosecution cases
*Ability to manage complex investigations and enforcement activity independently
*Strong report writing and evidence-based decision-making skills
*Confident engaging with businesses, stakeholders and the public
*Ability to work flexibly across both office and field-based environments
