Job Description:
The Managing Director will play a central role in leading the next phase of growth and evolution. As a well-established, family-owned business with over 45 years of heritage in construction and infrastructure supply, the company is now transitioning from a relationship-led SME into a more structured, scalable, and commercially disciplined organisation.
This role exists to drive that transition - embedding operational rigour, strengthening commercial performance, and positioning the business for future investment or exit. The Managing Director will take full ownership of business performance, ensuring growth is delivered alongside improved margins, stronger systems, and long-term value creation.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Executive & Strategic Leadership
• Lead the overall direction and performance of the business, with full P&L accountability.
• Define and execute a clear growth strategy aligned to market opportunities across construction and infrastructure.
• Act as the primary interface with shareholders, providing clarity on performance, risks, and opportunities.
• Balance respect for the company’s heritage with the introduction of structure, pace, and accountability required for scale.
Growth, Market Positioning & Commercial Development
• Build on strong relationships with Tier 1 contractors and infrastructure clients to drive revenue growth.
• Evolve the business from a product supplier to a broader solutions-led partner, incorporating service, data, and innovation.
• Identify and unlock growth opportunities across new sectors, key accounts, and framework agreements.
• Strengthen brand positioning as a leading provider of site safety and operational support services.
Profitability, Pricing & Commercial Discipline
• Drive EBITDA growth through improved margin management and commercial discipline.
• Develop and implement a structured pricing strategy across products, contracts, and services.
• Embed cost-to-serve awareness and customer profitability analysis into decision-making.
• Increase revenue contribution from higher-margin, value-added services.
Operational Excellence & Supply Chain Performance
• Optimise end-to-end supply chain, warehousing, and distribution operations.
• Ensure consistent delivery aligned to the "right product, right place, right time" proposition.
• Introduce scalable processes, systems, and automation across operations and logistics.
• Improve stock management, supplier performance, and working capital efficiency.
• Build operational resilience to support national growth.
Organisation, Culture & Leadership Capability
• Design and implement an organisational structure that supports scale and accountability.
• Build and develop a high-performing leadership team across operations, commercial, and finance.
• Embed a performance-driven culture aligned with the company’s values: people-first, can-do attitude, and continuous improvement.
• Strengthen succession planning and leadership capability across the business.
Transformation, Data & Systems
• Drive the adoption of data-led decision-making across commercial and operational functions.
• Implement KPIs, dashboards, and reporting frameworks aligned to growth and profitability.
• Lead digital and operational transformation across systems, data, and customer experience.
• Leverage existing innovation to position the business as a modern, insight-led supply chain partner.
Investment Readiness & Value Creation
• Develop and execute a structured value creation plan aligned to shareholder objectives.
• Prepare the business for private equity investment, M&A, or strategic exit.
• Improve governance, financial controls, and reporting standards.
• Drive cash generation, EBITDA growth, and scalable infrastructure to support valuation.
PERSON PROFILE
Experience
• Proven experience as a Managing Director, General Manager, or senior operational leader within supply chain, distribution, logistics, or related sectors.
• Track record of scaling SMEs (c. £10m–£50m+) through growth, transformation, or turnaround.
• Experience operating in, or preparing a business for, private equity investment or exit.
• Strong background in pricing strategy, operational transformation, organisational design, and margin improvement.
Capabilities & Attributes
• Strong commercial acumen with full ownership of financial and operational performance.
• Deep understanding of supply chain operations and scalable business models.
• Data-driven, with the ability to translate insight into practical action.
• Comfortable operating across both strategic and hands-on operational levels.
• Effective stakeholder manager with the ability to influence at board and operational levels.
Leadership Style & Mindset
• Acts as a business leader first, with a strong bias for delivery and outcomes.
• Hands-on, visible, and comfortable driving change within the operation.
• Structured and disciplined, while remaining pragmatic and adaptable.
• Respectful of a family-owned, values-led culture while introducing necessary rigour.
• Resilient, high-energy, and comfortable leading through periods of change and growth.
