This pathway is ideal if you want to build confidence in the classroom and develop practical skills prior to committing to formal training.
Your First Year: SEND Teaching Assistant Experience
You will begin your journey working in a secondary school as a Teaching Assistant, supporting students with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).
In this role, you will:
*Provide one-to-one and small group support for students with SEND
*Assist pupils in accessing the curriculum and engaging in lessons
*Support behaviour management and emotional regulation strategies
*Work closely with teachers and the SENCO to implement tailored support plans
*Contribute to a positive, inclusive learning environment
This stage is designed to build your confidence, communication skills, and understanding of differentiated learning. There is no requirement for lesson planning or marking.
Your Second Year: Teacher Training
Following a successful first year, you will move into a salaried teacher training position within the same school or trust.
During this stage, you will:
*Train towards Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)
*Receive ongoing mentoring and structured support
*Gradually take on teaching responsibilities
*Have the opportunity to complete a PGCE alongside your training
This ensures a smooth transition from classroom experience into a fully qualified teaching role.
