Employment Lawyer - 6-9 Month Fixed-Term Contract
Chelmsford, Essex | Public Sector | Part-Time (22.2 hrs/week) £60,000-£70,000 pro rata (DOE)


We’re partnering with a well-established public sector organisation in Chelmsford to recruit an experienced Employment Lawyer on a 6-9 month fixed-term contract.
This is a genuinely engaging in-house opportunity for a qualified employment lawyer looking to step beyond private practice and make a tangible impact. You’ll operate at a strategic level, influence decision-making, and play a key role in developing internal legal capability while managing a varied and complex caseload.
The RoleYou will provide expert advice across the full spectrum of employment law, including discrimination, whistle-blowing, unfair dismissal, pay disputes, TUPE, organisational restructures, and disciplinary processes. In addition to advisory work, you’ll contribute to policy development, deliver training, and support the upskilling of HR and people teams.
Key Responsibilities*Provide clear, pragmatic legal advice on complex employment matters to senior stakeholders
*Monitor and interpret new legislation and case law, translating developments into practical guidance
*Draft and review employment documentation, including policies, contracts, and settlement agreements
*Prepare tribunal updates, reports, and briefing papers with actionable recommendations
*Design and deliver training sessions on employment law and risk management
*Maintain accurate legal records and support governance and continuous improvement initiatives
About You*Qualified Solicitor, Barrister, or Chartered Legal Executive with a current practising certificate
*Minimum 5 years’ experience handling Employment Tribunal cases, ideally within a Respondent-focused practice
*Experience in, or exposure to, public sector or unionised environments is advantageous
*Strong drafting and advocacy skills, with the ability to communicate complex legal issues to non-legal audiences
*Highly organised, able to manage competing priorities and work autonomously under pressure
