Main Purpose of the Role
To provide high-quality care to surgical patients under the supervision of consultants and registrars, supporting inpatient, outpatient, emergency, and theatre services while developing clinical and surgical skills.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Duties
*Assess and manage surgical inpatients and emergency admissions.
*Participate in daily ward rounds and patient reviews.
*Diagnose and manage acute surgical conditions.
*Request and interpret investigations (bloods, imaging, scans).
*Prepare management plans and discharge summaries.
*Provide peri-operative and post-operative care.
Surgical/Theatre Duties
*Assist consultants and senior surgeons in operating theatres.
*Perform minor procedures according to competence level.
*Gain exposure to elective and emergency surgeries.
Outpatient & Clinics
*Attend surgical outpatient clinics.
*Assess referrals and follow-up patients.
*Document patient management plans.
On-Call Duties
*Participate in emergency surgical rota.
*Review acutely unwell surgical patients.
*Work with emergency department teams and other specialties.
Teaching & Training
*Participate in teaching medical students and junior staff.
*Attend departmental teaching, audit, and MDT meetings.
*Engage in continuing professional development.
Person Specification (Typical)
Essential
*Medical degree (MBBS/MBChB or equivalent)
*Full registration with General Medical Council (GMC) and licence to practice
*NHS or equivalent clinical experience
*Good communication and teamwork skills
*Evidence of clinical competence
