An exciting opportunity has become available within a leading specialist insurer operating across the UK commercial and engineering insurance markets. The organisation has built a strong reputation for delivering innovative underwriting solutions across a range of complex and specialist risks and is continuing to invest in the growth of its underwriting capabilities.
As part of this expansion, the business is looking to appoint a Plant & Machinery Specialist Underwriter to join its Specialty Underwriting team. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced underwriter seeking to take ownership of a specialist portfolio while contributing to underwriting strategy, product development and long-term business growth.

Your Roles & Responsibilities:
While in this position your duties will include, but are not limited to:
*Underwriting new and existing Plant & Machinery business in accordance with underwriting authority and governance standards
*Assessing, pricing and negotiating complex plant, machinery and engineering-related risks
*Managing a portfolio of brokers and key trading partners, developing strong and lasting relationships
*Driving profitable growth through effective risk selection and portfolio management
*Underwriting a range of specialist risks including Contractors’ Plant & Equipment, Hired-In Plant, Owned Plant, Construction Machinery, Mobile Equipment and Specialist Engineering Plant
*Evaluating associated liability and property exposures to ensure appropriate coverage solutions
*Providing technical guidance and referral support to underwriting colleagues where required
*Monitoring portfolio performance, market conditions and claims trends to identify opportunities and emerging risks
*Collaborating with internal teams including Distribution, Risk Engineering, Claims and Actuarial functions
*Supporting product development initiatives and contributing to underwriting strategy
*Representing the business at broker meetings, market presentations and industry events
*Maintaining strong underwriting discipline while supporting commercial growth objectives
*Producing accurate portfolio analysis and reporting to support business decision-making
What You Will Need to Apply:
The ideal candidate will possess significant underwriting experience within Plant & Machinery, Engineering, Construction or wider Commercial Insurance markets. A strong technical understanding of Contractors’ Plant & Equipment risks and the ability to assess complex and high-value schedules will be essential.
Candidates should demonstrate excellent underwriting judgement, strong analytical capabilities and a proven track record of balancing profitable growth with effective risk management. Previous experience managing broker relationships and developing new business opportunities will be highly advantageous.
Strong communication, negotiation and stakeholder management skills are required, alongside the ability to work collaboratively across multiple business functions. Professional insurance qualifications, such as ACII, or progress towards them would be beneficial.
Experience gained within a specialist insurer, engineering insurer or London Market environment would be advantageous, as would exposure to portfolio management, delegated authority frameworks or mentoring less experienced underwriters.
The successful candidate will be commercially minded, technically accomplished and motivated by the opportunity to influence the development of a growing specialist portfolio.
