Full job descriptionAn excellent opportunity has arisen for an experienced Senior Generator Service Engineer to join a growing engineering business supporting critical power systems across the UK. This hands-on role combines field-based service work with workshop activities, covering maintenance, fault finding, repairs, installations, and commissioning of generator systems from 20kVA to 3000kVA.

Description
Key Responsibilities
*Carry out planned preventative maintenance on customer-owned and company-owned generator equipment.
*Service diesel generators, including oil and filter changes, fluid inspections, and fuel, coolant, and oil sampling.
*Conduct load bank testing and performance assessments.
*Diagnose and repair mechanical and electrical faults across generator systems ranging from 20kVA to 3000kVA.
*Respond to breakdowns and emergency call-outs as part of an on-call rota.
*Repair and replace generator components including fuel pumps, cooling systems, starter motors, AVRs, batteries, heaters, and associated controls.
*Interrogate, configure, and fault-find on generator control systems including DSE, ComAp, and DEIF.
*Support synchronisation systems, automatic transfer systems, and control panel upgrades.
*Assist with generator installation, commissioning, decommissioning, and large-scale power projects.
*Carry out workshop-based servicing, testing, and generator preparation activities.
*Complete detailed service reports and maintenance documentation.
*Support stock control, workshop organisation, and equipment readiness.
*Mentor junior engineers and contribute to maintaining high engineering standards.
Profile
The Successful Candidate
The ideal candidate will have a strong background within the generator, critical power, or industrial power generation sector and be confident working independently on both planned maintenance and reactive breakdowns.
Essential Requirements:
*Proven generator service and maintenance experience.
*Strong mechanical and electrical fault-finding skills.
*Experience servicing and repairing diesel generators up to 3000kVA.
*Knowledge of generator control systems and associated electrical equipment.
*Electrical qualifications (City & Guilds or equivalent).
*Valid CSCS or ECS card.
*Full UK Driving Licence.
*Excellent customer-facing communication skills.
*Strong problem-solving ability and attention to detail.
*Ability to participate in on-call and out-of-hours support arrangements.
Desirable:
*Manufacturer-specific generator training.
*Experience with DSE, ComAp, and DEIF control systems.
*BS7909 certification.
*17th or 18th Edition qualification.
*Mechanical engineering qualifications.
*Experience working on large-scale power projects.
*C+E (Class 1) licence and trailer towing experience.
