Duties:


*Manage a caseload of UASC as looked after children under Section 20 (and occasionally Section 31) of the Children Act 1989.

*For young people aged 16+, develop and review comprehensive Pathway Plans to prepare them for leaving care and transitioning to independent living (as Care Leavers up to age 25).

*Source and monitor appropriate placements (such as specialist foster care, supported lodgings, or semi-independent accommodation) that meet the young person’s cultural, linguistic, and religious needs.

*Conduct legally robust, comprehensive age assessments (jointly with a colleague) in line with Merton guidelines when a young person’s claimed age is doubted by the Home Office or Local Authority.

*Ensure all care planning accounts for three possible immigration outcomes: receiving refugee status/leave to remain, being refused leave, or reaching adulthood before a decision is made.

*Complete holistic assessments of need, focusing heavily on physical health (e.g., undiagnosed medical conditions), mental health, and independent living skills.

*Support the young person through the complex Home Office asylum process, including arranging and attending immigration legal appointments with specialised solicitors.

*Attend Home Office asylum interviews as the "Responsible Adult" to ensure the young person’s welfare and rights are protected.

*Assist young people in obtaining and safeguarding crucial documentation, such as Biometric Residence Permits (BRPs) and Application Registration Cards (ARCs).

*Identify and support young people suffering from PTSD, anxiety, depression, and grief resulting from war, persecution, separation from family, or arduous travel routes.

*Identify signs of modern slavery, trafficking, or exploitation. Submit National Referral Mechanism (NRM) referrals where trafficking is suspected, and implement robust safety plans.

*UASC are at a high risk of going missing or being re-trafficked; social workers

*Fast-track enrolment into education, prioritising English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) courses, schools, or colleges, and complete Personal Education Plans (PEPs).

*Ensure immediate registration with a GP and dentist, and facilitate access to specialist therapeutic services (e.g., Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services - CAMHS, or refugee trauma charities).

*Effectively utilise professional interpreters for all visits, reviews, and assessments to ensure the young person’s voice is accurately heard and understood.

Relevant Qualifications/ requirements :
*Social Work Degree
*Social work England registration
*Clear DBS
*3+years permanent experience working as a social worker
