Hays Education are delighted to be supporting a well-established secondary school in Wigan in their search for a Science Technician to join their busy and supportive science department. This is an excellent opportunity for someone looking to begin or develop a career within a school laboratory environment. The role is offered on a part-time basis, working 3 days per week, with flexible days and hours that can be discussed upon registration. Available for an immediate start or from September, this position also has the potential to become a permanent opportunity for the right candidate. The school is keen to hear from individuals with previous experience in a Science Technician, Laboratory Assistant or similar role, but would also welcome applications from candidates with a general science background or recent graduates holding a degree in a scientific subject who are looking to gain experience within education.
Your new role
*Assist in the preparation, setup and clearing away of equipment and materials for practical science lessons.
*Support the Science Technician team in maintaining laboratories, prep rooms and storage areas.
*Ensure equipment is cleaned, organised and stored safely following practical sessions.
*Assist with ordering and checking deliveries of science supplies.
*Support the preparation of chemicals, solutions and equipment under supervision.
*Ensure laboratories remain safe, tidy and compliant with health and safety regulations.
*Assist teaching staff with practical demonstrations and classroom activities when required.
*Support wider science department projects, displays and school events.
What you’ll need to succeed
*Previous experience working as a Science Technician, Laboratory Assistant or within a scientific environment would be advantageous.
*Candidates with a general science background are encouraged to apply.
*Recent graduates with a degree in Biology, Chemistry, Physics or another relevant scientific discipline will be considered.
*Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
*Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
*Good communication skills and a proactive, positive attitude.
*School-based experience would be highly beneficial but is not essential.
*Enhanced DBS on the Update Service, or willingness to obtain one through Hays.
