We’re working with a growing construction business based in Leytonstone that is undergoing a significant finance transformation following the appointment of a new Fractional CFO.
This isn’t a role for someone who simply produces management accounts. We’re looking for a technically strong Financial Controller who enjoys getting into the detail, solving problems and bringing order to a finance function.
If you’re the type of person who thrives on investigating historic balances, reconciling complex accounts and leaving things in a far better place than you found them, we’d love to hear from you.
The business has historically produced quarterly management accounts, with limited monthly balance sheet reconciliations. As part of a wider finance improvement programme, you’ll take ownership of reviewing and reconciling the balance sheet, identifying historic issues and establishing robust financial controls.
You’ll be working in a business with long-established processes, including paper-based records and legacy filing systems, so this role requires someone who is naturally inquisitive and resourceful. There won’t always be someone who can tell you the answer-you’ll need to know how to find it.
What You’ll Be Doing
*Completing detailed monthly balance sheet reconciliations.
*Deep diving into historic accounts and investigating long-standing reconciling items.
*Understanding the story behind transactions and ensuring every balance is fully supported.
*Working through legacy records and identifying missing information.
*Producing clear, accurate reconciliation schedules and supporting documentation.
*Improving balance sheet integrity and strengthening financial controls.
*Working closely with the Fractional CFO to improve the quality and reliability of financial reporting.
*Taking ownership of issues from investigation through to resolution.
*What We’re Looking For
*This role will suit someone who is:
*Self-sufficient and comfortable working independently.
*Naturally curious, with a willingness to dig deep into the detail.
*Experienced in investigating historic accounts rather than accepting balances at face value.
*Methodical, organised and relentless when it comes to getting reconciliations right.
*Comfortable asking questions, challenging transactions and identifying the commercial substance behind accounting entries.
*Someone who enjoys untangling complex accounting issues and creating order from messy data.
Experience Required
*Previous experience as an Interim Financial Controller, Financial Controller or Senior Finance Manager.
*Strong technical accounting skills with exceptional balance sheet reconciliation experience.
*Audit-trained or from a strong technical accounting background.
*Experience within construction or contract-based businesses would be highly advantageous.
*Advanced Excel skills.
*Experience with Microsoft Dynamics is beneficial, and exposure to eVision would be an advantage.
